The Salvation Army Bridge is located at 20 centres throughout New Zealand

Each Bridge centre offers different programmes and support. Some Bridge centres offer residential programmes along with community programmes. Whereas others offer the day programme or the rural pathways programme. Kaitāia

Services 

Drug & Alcohol Assessment will be carried out, followed by confirmation of an individual care plan for you. Support options include:

  • One-to-one individual sessions (up to six).
  • Referral to a Choice one day workshop to address methamphetamine misuse, if appropriate.
  •  An eight-week Alcohol & Drug Day Programme, running Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings.
  • Whānau support group, Thursday afternoons.
  • After care support group, Thursday afternoons.

Kaikohe

Services 

The process starts with a Drug & Alcohol Assessment, followed by confirmation of a treatment pathway. Treatment options include: 

  • One-to-one individual sessions.
  • Referral to a Drive SOBA programme if you face three or more drink driving charges, and this programme is appropriate.
  • Referral to a Choice one day workshop to address methamphetamine misuse, if appropriate.
  • Making Changes Group Kaikohe: 4 x two-hour group sessions Friday mornings in Kaikohe over four consecutive weeks.

What to expect 

Initial contact will be by phone. A caseworker will get to know your situation they will recommend an individual care plan for you.

Accommodation 

None offered, as there are no residential programmes at Kaikohe Bridge.

Whangārei

You will be greeted by a caseworker, who will spend an hour with you getting to know your story. Then, after a second appointment, they will recommend a treatment pathway selected from the following options: 

1. Making Changes Group: this group explores the impact of alcohol &/or drug use and sets goals for change. Wednesdays 12:30pm - 2:30pm (4 sessions).

OR

2. Bridge Day Programme: a more in-depth educational group to help reduce the harm experienced from alcohol &/or drug use. Monday - Thursday 9:10am - 12:15pm (8 weeks).

OR

3. Brief Intervention: Up to 6 x One to One Sessions to address specific needs.

Recovery Church Whangārei

Mt Eden (Auckland)

Services 

Eight-week Full Time Residential or Day Service

  • Stage 1: Pre-entry service: Before entering the programme, you will attend a pre-entry service. A group runs twice per week, providing information on what you can expect while in The Bridge. This includes meeting with a professional caseworker and a registered nurse to check on your physical health needs. The sessions cover several different areas. If you have been a Bridge client previously, this will be a short process. If you are new to The Bridge, this will take a little longer.
  • Stage 2: Support from The Bridge: This starts each day with a spirit lifter and then moves to about three different groups each day. You will also have at least one individual counselling session per week with your caseworker.
  • Stage 3:  Maintaining the Change: After completing the programme, you will graduate and enter Stage 3. This is an onsite support group that is available to you to support your ongoing recovery.

Referral

After you contact our Bridge assessment team, you will be offered an assessment with a caseworker. This will be within five working days of your initial contact with us.

You will be given an idea of when you can join Stage 1. You may need to provide additional information, e.g. from court or probation, but we will endeavour to make this as quick as possible.

You can call us yourself or be referred by a health provider (GP, DHB, other treatment service), probation, corrections or another external agency.

What to expect 

Residential programme: 

You will be met by one of our friendly staff and introduced to your caseworker. They will answer any of your questions and ensure that the relevant paperwork is completed. 

Your property will be checked, and you will undertake a test to ascertain your current AOD usage and then proceed to a mihi whakatau (welcoming ceremony) with the existing clients, staff and chaplain.

A residential support worker will then take you to your room where you will be staying. This may be shared with another person. 

Accommodation 

Visitors are welcome after 6 pm on weekdays and on weekends.

As the largest of the sites, we have a well-stocked library, arts and craft room, as well as a separate client gym. There is a separate visitor's room and an external play area for those with children. There is an excellent outdoor area for exercise, including volleyball and  SkyTV in the men's and ladies' separate lounge areas.

If you are a residential client, you will be transported to the residence, where a Residential Support Worker will take you to your room where you will be staying. This may be shared with another person. 

Accommodation 

The residential accommodation is separate from the treatment facility and is well-maintained. There are Residential Support Workers available for assistance 24/7. 

Visitors are welcome after 6 pm.

Clients who are not on weekend leave move to the Mt Eden site on a Friday afternoon, returning on Sunday evening.

Manurewa (Auckland) Puna Whakataa Short Stay Respite Service

Services 

Puna Whakataa is an AOD respite and support service run in partnership between Ember Korowai Takitini and The Salvation Army Bridge in Manurewa, South Auckland. The English translation of the name Puna Whakataa means 'the spring of rest and respite'. The service enables people to recover in an environment created for treatment and respite.

Referral

  • Referrals can be made through any recognized AOD practitioner and/or agency.  

  • We can accept self-referrals for returning guests, subject to meeting the criteria. 

What to expect 

  • A 10-bed short term treatment and respite facility operating since 2013.
  • Up to 14 days of respite to support guests and assist with their recovery pathways while they are staying connected to their community.
  • During people's stay, we work alongside them to support decision-making and connections to ongoing recovery and support. 
  • An innovative and collaborative service between Ember Korowai Takitini (expertise in peer work) and the Salvation Army Bridge (expertise in clinical work with alcohol and other drugs).
  • Intentional Peer Support and Community Reinforcement Approach. This includes one-on-one meetings and structured group sessions.  
  • Clinical expertise combined with lived experience and wisdom.
  • A variety of support services to assist with recovery and maintaining the change.

  • Guests have a structured daily routine during their stay. 
Midland

Services 

Midland Bridge is a residential and social detox service that offers support to people within the Midland DHB area. All referrals for Midland Bridge need to be made via our Waikato Bridge office an approved AOD clinical service, or GPs and primary health providers.

Midland Bridge provides social detox and residential treatment for those who are experiencing harm from alcohol and other drug use.   

Visiting experts 

Visiting experts give talks about support services available both within and outside of the Salvation Army. These visits provide access to wrap-around services to people within the residential programme.

  • Budget and financial counselling.  
  • Smoking cessation support. 
  • Sexual health support.  
  • Oasis: Support for reducing the harm of gambling
  • Reintegration Services: Wrap-around services for life after prison.
  • Accommodation Services.
  • Life skills and parenting education.
  • Vocational support.

Referral to Midland Bridge is made via the Waikato Bridge office, phone (07) 839 6871 or via the following methods:

  • DHB approved AOD clinical services.
  • Family and affected others.
  • GPs and primary health providers.
  • Self-referral is not permitted.

What to expect 

You will be met by one of our friendly staff and introduced to your caseworker. Any pressing needs will be addressed.

The admissions process involves completing forms, a bag search, and a nursing assessment.

After lunch, you will spend time with staff and peers. Then you will complete some foundation work. This covers, but is not limited to, our model of treatment, rules, and your rights as a consumer of our service.

Accommodation 

The Midland residential accommodation is a modern, comfortable and well-maintained facility. There are Residential Support Workers available for assistance 24/7.

There is flexible accommodation available that can cater to men and women, with an upstairs area dedicated to women. There is a swimming pool located on-site.

After lunch, you will spend time with the staff and complete some foundation work. This covers but is not limited to our model of treatment, rules, and your rights as a consumer of our service.

This is followed by a short orientation to The Salvation Army, its history and its current presence in the community.

Later in the afternoon, a residential support worker will take you to your room, where you will be staying for the duration of the programme. The residential support worker will show you around and provide time for you to settle in.

After this, you will spend time with staff and complete some foundation work. This covers but is not limited to our model of treatment, rules, and your rights as a consumer of our service.

This is followed by a short orientation to The Salvation Army, its history and current presence in the community.

Later in the afternoon a Residential Support Worker take you to your room where you will be staying for the duration of the programme. The Residential Support Worker will show you around and provide time for you to settle in.

Bridge Education Programme (BEP)

  • 10am-noon Monday, Wednesday & Friday mornings for 5 weeks.

9-Week Intensive Programme

  • 9-week programme. Christchurch participants are encouraged to complete the first 8 weeks as a resident and then transition to a day-client for the last week. 
  • Out-of-town residents complete all nine weeks in the residence

Recovery Church: 250 Colombo St, Sydenham, Christchurch. 

Referral

Phone Central Coordination Service (CCS): 03 338 4437 for a phone screen and subsequent referral to the most appropriate agency to match the level of alcohol and/or drug mis-use experienced. 

To attend Te Awhina drop-in centre simply turn up and meet with staff to ensure this is the best option. Ph 03 338 4436.

Referrals are received from CCS and other alcohol and drug service providers.

Cost 

  • Day programme: No cost.
  • Residential programme: WINZ redirects benefit payments to cover the board portion of the stay, leaving people with a small weekly allowance. When a person is not receiving a benefit a private fee is charged.

What to expect 

Residential programme

On the first-day people are met by one of our friendly staff. Over the first-week people are orientated to the programme, staff and the routines. 

There is 24/7 support on-site, along with group sessions daily.

Accommodation 

The residential accommodation consists of two wings of small, single bedrooms with shared bathroom facilities. Basic linen is provided. Each wing has its own lounge.

There is a large dining room and large shared lounge area along with an art room, small gym and laundry.

All meals are cooked by a qualified chef.

  • Dunedin Bridge provides a 9 week residential intensive programme.
  • A day programme can be offered for attendance at the intensive 9 week programme if home accommodation supports recovery. 
  • Recovery Support Group (RSG) is held weekly on a Tuesday.

What to expect 

Residential programme: 

You will be met by one of our friendly staff and introduced to your Case Worker, any pressing needs will be addressed including water and coffee.

The admissions process involves completing forms, a bag search, followed by a mihi whakatau (welcoming ceremony).

After lunch you will spend time with staff and complete some foundation work. This covers but is not limited to our model of treatment, rules, and your rights as a consumer of our service.

This is followed by a short orientation to The Salvation Army, its history and current presence in the community.

Later in the afternoon a Residential Support Worker take you to the house where you will be staying for your treatment for the 9 weeks duration of the programme. The Support Worker will show you to your room, show you around and provide time to settle in.

Accommodation 

The residential accommodation facility was refurbished four years ago. It is modern and well maintained. People on programme have individual rooms. Men and women are on separate levels. Meals are cooked by residents on a roster system in pairs.

There is provided Support Workers who have 8-hour awake shifts.

The accommodation is approximately a 30-minute walk from The Dunedin Bridge Centre.

A van is provided for transport to and from the Residential accommodation and the Bridge Centre Monday to Friday.

Saturday a van is provided for an outing for the clients staying at the residence over the weekend.
